Scope and ContentResearch Department Reports were published after research had been carried out by engineers and scientists. The Research Department had been proposed as early as 1913, in order to address the continuing developments in the field of electrical engineering. The Department created a policy that allowed for the day-to-day needs of the company and for the future development of electrical engineering outside of the company. It evolved a rigorous quality control procedure for materials bought in to be used in the production of equipment manufactured by the company, whilst continuing to develop and improve existing electrical equipment it produced. At the same time it developed links with outside organisations and individuals involved in research that could be beneficial to Metroploitan-Vickers. The Research Department also carried out tests on behalf of other companies and government departments, thus providing them with impartial results.
The Department remained an important part of the company at Trafford Park, it's continuation reflects the wider changes that occurred as Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co Ltd became part of Associated Electrical Industries Limited (A.E.I.), in 1929. The Reports carry on through this period right up until the early 1970's, by which time A.E.I had merged with the General Electric Company (G.E.C) in November 1967. G.E.C. were later to become G.E.C. Alsthom in 1988, and remained so up until the Trafford Park sites were eventually closed and the buildings demolished. This series of Reports were kept in the Library at Trafford Park.
A report, YA2003.50/1/2/174, was written in 1924 on the early history of the Research Department as well as proposals for the continued development of the department.
The Research Department came under the control of various parent companies, they were as follows;
